For more than ten years I've worked as an anthropological archaeologist, paleoecologist, and paleoclimatologist in arid and semi-arid mountain landscapes, studying how human societies and their environments have shaped one another over millennia. That experience builds on a decade spent building Unix/Linux systems at scale, from junior sysadmin to staff systems engineer to leading the architecture of web infrastructure serving five million customers. A background fueled by the arts runs through both. As a systems thinker, I've traced vegetation change across the Holocene, excavated a legacy codebase, and deployed server infrastructure from architecture through deployment. These experiences prepare me to tackle the most challenging problems of our time. This includes following AI closely: not to chase it, but to evaluate how it can be deployed responsibly, ethically, and in service to humanity.
